WWE Superstar Darren Young shocked the world of sports entertainment when he announced that he was gay in an interview with TMZ on Wednesday. Young, who’s real name is Fred Rosser) appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” on August 16 to talk about why he decided it was the right time to come out. As Newsday reports, Young told host Matt Lauer that one of the main reasons he chose now to come out was that he is “deeply in love.”
Young remained secretive about his relationship but being in love with his boyfriend of two years is the force behind his decision, a decision which he feels has put him in the position to have “the best of both worlds” professionally and personally. He can be himself and be open about his love and professionally he has gained the support of fellow wrestler’s like John Cena and also support from WWE Chariman Vince McMahon. Both stated they were proud of Young for coming out and being open about his sexuality.
Young also shared feelings that many in the LGBT community can relate to. He told Lauer:
“I’ve been suppressing these feeling for so long in my life.”
He admitted to being “terrified” about being outed and having his career ruined, but now he can live his life freely. Young stated that he wants “to be a role model” and has been given the opportunity to do so by being very active in the WWE’s Be A Star anti-bullying campaign.
Also, like Jason Collins, the fist NBA player to come out as gay while still playing, Young will be become a source of support and inspiration for other athletes who will come out in the future.
