According to an Aug. 17 report from Fansided, Jack Swagger goes toe-to-toe with Rusev on the WWE SummerSlam 2014 main card, in a match with national pride on the line. Swagger, a former member of the critically-acclaimed We the People tag team supergroup, battles Rusev in a Flag Match. Zeb Colter is expected to corner Swagger, while Rusev will have Lana in his corner.
Rusev has had a feud brewing with Swagger for several months, as the two collided last month during the Battleground pay-per-view in Tampa. Rusev won that match via countout, but Swagger gave him his most competitive bout yet under the WWE banner. Up until that point, Rusev ran through his opponents with ease.
Rusev still hasn't lost in his WWE bouts, so he's clearly being built up as an unstoppable heel. He hasn't yet attained a level of popularity as other superstar villain characters such as Randy Orton and Brock Lesnar, but he's well on his way. Rusev, who made his WWE main card debut at this year's Royal Rumble, defeated the likes of R-Truth, Zack Ryder and Sin Cara, before facing stiffer competition.
Big E gave Rusev a tough test on Monday Night Raw a few months back, but his performance was nothing compared to the effort Swagger turned in last month at Battleground. For the first time in his WWE career, Rusev was sent backpeddling after Swagger landed some shots on him.
At WWE SummerSlam 2014, expect more of the same from Swagger. In all likelihood, the match will be another win for Rusev, but Swagger could elevate his status with a solid performance at the show. Swagger, 32, doesn't want to be just a gatekeeper for the WWE's top heels. He wants to make his move towards a title shot.
The first step is a crisp effort against Rusev. Even if he doesn't win, it would help his cause to do his part to generate heat for Rusev's character, and work hard to sell his moves. Their match will essentially be a game of capture the flag, as Rusev will be trying to grab Swagger's American Flag before the former We The People star can attain the Russian flag that will be in the opposing corner.
WWE SummerSlam 2014, which features a main event of Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena, goes down on Aug. 17 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The card also includes a bout between AJ Lee against Paige, plus a clash between Bray Wyatt and Chris Jericho. The festivities begin at 8 p.m. on the WWE Network.
