When WWE superstar Darren Young came out of the closest to TMZ of all people, it sent a ripple through the wrestling world. Now, prowrestling.com reported on Aug. 16 that NBA star Jason Collins spoke to Young about what he can expect and gave him some advice.
While he is not the only known gay person in professional wrestling history, when Darren Young came out of the closet, he was the first active WWE superstar to do so while still wrestling for the promotion. Luckily for Young, the WWE and the Be a Star foundation have been very supportive.
That is more than can be said for Jason Collins, who found it hard to latch onto an NBA team after being the first active NBA star to come out of the closet. When they two spoke, Collins gave him some advice on how to deal with the new pressure that comes with being a role model and how to be positive and strong about the situation.
Both Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon came out in support of Young on Twitter, saying they were proud of him for making his sexual orientation known. While Randy Orton did an interview and said he didn’t believe anyone in the locker room knew that Young was gay, both John Cena and Titus O’Neal makes it sound like it was not a secret.
Since Darren Young came out of the closet, he has started working with the Be a Star foundation and has spoken to kids about how to stand up for yourself and be proud in who you are, regardless of the differences.
