On Tuesday night, the WWE all but officially broke up The Corre at the SmackDown taping which will air on Friday, June 10th. According to PWInsider.com, Wade Barrett walked out of his 6 man tag match with other Corre members Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater. Slater and Gabriel would go on to lose the match. However, later in the show, Slater and Gabriel confront Barrett backstage and tell him that The Corre is over and that they're finished.
For the last few months, the WWE has been teasing a complete breakup of the group. The WWE is starving for more depth and talent on their roster and for some reason believes splitting this stable up will help address those issues. I believe that the WWE could have kept these 3 wrestlers together and used their group, and recent history, to get them over.
In late 2009, Nexus was going through a power struggle between Wade Barrett and CM Punk for control of the dominant faction. Punk would end up winning the control of Nexus and Wade would be sent packing from RAW to SmackDown. However, Gabriel and Slater would follow Wade to SmackDown and they would form the group The Corre in early 2010 with Ezekial Jackson.
Over the last 6 weeks or so, The Corre kicked out Jackson and they've been feuding ever since. Now Slater and Gabriel have left and the group is all but dead. It remains to be seen if the WWE will try and salvage the group or let it fade away into WWE history.
Gabriel is set to get a major "push" next month when the WWE heads to his homeland of South Africa. It's unclear as to whether or not the WWE will turn him 'face' before then. But, Gabriel has been pegged as a breakout star for some time now.
With Barrett entrenched as a solid mid-card heel, Jackson feuding Barrett for the Intercontinental Belt, and Gabriel being rumored for a big push, this leaves Slater the odd man out. We saw what happened to Ted DiBiase Jr. when they split up legacy. Cody Rhodes became a star while Ted wasted away into obscurity. I don't see how Slater benefits from a Corre breakup.
The WWE should have built up Slater and Gabriel more before breaking up The Corre that way they could have had individual feuds to go right into if this split is for good. As always, when it comes to WWE storylines, they can change at any given moment.
