With UFC 158 set to take place on Saturday night, and roughly 3 weeks until WrestleMania 29, UFC President Dana White shocked the MMA and wrestling worlds by revealing for the first time ever that WWE CEO Vince McMahon challenged him to a fight. In fact, the elder McMahon wanted this fight to take place inside the octagon or the wrestling ring. According to a March 16 report by F4WOnline.com, UFC's Dana White made the following comments:
"Let me tell you something, and I've never said this before ever in any interview anywhere. If Vince hear's this, he's going to go nuts. Vince is too old, which he won't think he is, and he'll go crazy. And he wanted to [fight] one time. Vince wanted to fight me. Swear to God. Called me up and said, 'Let's do it. We can either do it in the UFC, or let's do it at WrestleMania.' And I said, You are crazy."
White would go on to say that he has a great deal of respect for Vince, but that McMahon is too old to be fighting anybody. Vince is in his late 60's and is slowly phasing out of the daily operations with the WWE. His daughter and son-in-law are taking over the reins.
Apparently, Vince wanted to orchestrate this PR stunt at WrestleMania 27 as the semi-main event to John Cena and The Miz. This was the same WrestleMania that The Rock hosted just a few months after his long awaited return to the WWE.
The UFC has become a major powerhouse in the sports world and particularly the PPV market. A great deal of White's respect for McMahon is due to the success that Vince has had with PPV buys and TV production. If you look closely, you can see how the UFC has implemented some of the WWE's strategies and on-air elements. However, as for a fight between the two, the edge would have to go to Dana White because of the 24 year age difference.
UFC 158 is live on PPV from Montreal. The event features a title fight between Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz.
WrestleMania 29 takes place on Sunday April 7. The main event is a rematch between The Rock and John Cena.
