Convervative talk show host Glenn Beck recently hammered two WWE "characters," Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter, calling them “stupid wrestling people” on his show. On Friday, the pair first spoke in their WWE personas, then broke character and addressed Beck directly.
Swagger is the wrestler, and towers over his “Real American” manager Zeb Colter in the video below. The pair mock Tea Party members, and as part of their shtick -- WWE is known to be entertainment, not reality -- they overzealously talk about the Constitution, their hatred of illegal immigrants, and “true patriotism.”
Beck, noting this, took offense and said the pair were out to “demonize” the Tea Party. He said,
Maybe that’s the way WWE people view the Tea Party. Maybe they love to hate the Tea Party.
In the embedded video, Swagger and Coulter stay in character for a time, then break out into their true personas: Jake Hager (Swagger) and Wayne Keown (Colter).
The two explained to Beck that they are merely entertainers. Keown said:
We aren’t in the political business, or the immigration business. We are in the entertainment business. Many of your followers are WWE fans and they understand the difference between reality and entertainment. Are you out of touch with your audience Glenn? Or are you just a "stupid political commentator?"
Keown is saying what most know: that pro wrestling is faked. It is more about acting than pure wrestling, although the "actors" have to be able to take punishment.
In addition, Keown again reiterated a prior invitation they had made, for Beck to appear next Monday on "Monday Night RAW." The pair offered him five minutes of unedited air-time to offer a rebuttal. Beck has already rejected the offer once, saying,
Unfortunately I am currently booked doing anything else.
In other words, Beck was saying, in a manner similar to how an attractive woman might reject a suitor in a stereotypically demeaning way, saying she has to wash her hair, "No."
