Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson did not need to come back to the WWE. He has a very successful Hollywood career, with no less than four movies hitting in 2013 alone. However, according to IGN on Feb. 27, The Rock said he felt he owed it to the WWE to come back.
The Rock was gone for almost a decade before he showed up in 2011 and challenged John Cena to a match at Wrestlemania the following year. He beat Cena and then showed back up one night later to announce he was given a WWE championship shot, which he would cash in at the 2013 Royal Rumble.
The Rock won that match and is the new WWE Champion.
Johnson said that his return was years in the making, and when he came back, it was only going to be against the biggest draw in the WWE, which was John Cena. He said that was because he needed his return to help the WWE with its "box office appeal" and draw the biggest crowds possible. That was only possible with a star of John Cena's stature.
He said that the entire plan was to make the rematch between him, the champion, and John Cena, the "number one hero" take place in the biggest market in the world in New York City. He said his goal is to give back to the WWE, because of everything the WWE was able to help him achieve. This is his chance.
