The WWE held a huge tryout with a number of independent wrestling's bigger stars and PWInsider.com reported on Feb. 7 that a number of high profile independent stars showed up to take part in the event.
Triple H is pushing hard to sign some of the country's top independent talents, especially considering the success of men like CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Antonio Cesaro and The Shield in the big leagues. With Chris Hero, PAC and the recently signed El Generico in the developmental territory, the WWE seems to be picking up some of the best the independent scene has to offer.
Two Ring of Honor stars showed up at the tryouts, while two chose not to even try. The Briscoe Brothers received an invitation but said they tried out for the WWE before and don't want to do it again. However, current ROH TV Champion Adam Cole (who is also the PWG Champion) and Mike Bennett showed up for the tryout.
Dragon Gate's Samuray del Sol and Extreme Rising star Luke Hawx also showed up, along with former WWE talent Shawn "Gavin" Spears and former NFL player Lorenzo Hood. Former Ring of Honor talent Ricky Reyes, former TNA star Jesse Neal, and Smith James, a Taz student, also showed up.
There were also a number of novices there hoping to catch the WWE's eye, but the training by Bill DeMott was so rigorous that between nine and 10 people left injured and one person even quit on day one. The wrestlers trained, worked matches, and cut promos for the scouts.
Everyone was told they will hear back in two to four weeks with information about whether the WWE wants to sign them or not.
