The 2012 edition of WWE's Royal Rumble is set to take place on Sunday January 29th from St. Louis. As of now, there are a few matches set to take place at the PPV. With 2 1/2 more weeks, the WWE will surely continue to build up the PPV. However, there are a few backstage reports about who might be the winner of this year's 30 man Battle Royal, which is the main feature of the PPV. According to a Wednesday January 11th report by WrestleZone.com, the WWE brass is considering Randy Orton or Chris Jericho for this year's Rumble winner.
Initially, Randy Orton was reportedly penciled in to win the Rumble in his hometown of St. Louis. However, with his back injury, the WWE is either unsure of his status for the PPV or has changed their minds about Orton winning the Rumble.
Jericho, who returned to RAW on January 2nd, has been rumored to wrestle CM Punk at WrestleMania 28 on April 1st. If this rumor becomes true, then Jericho winning the Rumble would make sense as he can challenge Punk for the WWE title, provided that CM still has it after the Rumble.
As of now, the WWE is set on having the following 3 matches at this year's Royal Rumble: CM Punk vs. Dolph Ziggler, John Cena vs. Kane, and Daniel Bryan vs. Big Show vs. Mark Henry.
There are also a few rumors and speculations that Christian and/or Alberto Del Rio will return at the PPV and enter the Rumble.
