WWE RAW rolls into Chicago tonight with a war between the bearded rebel Daniel Bryan leading a collective of angered superstars against the ‘better of business’ corporate leadership of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. This week’s RAW will also see CM Punk return after a week-long absence, the Shield on the prowl to punish someone, and much more. Pro Wrestling Examiner breaks down all the big stories heading into tonight’s WWE RAW on USA Network (7pm C/8pm E).
The battle lines are drawn for the Battleground PPV
Daniel Bryan may have been unceremoniously stripped of the WWE Championship last week on RAW, but just when it seemed like Randy Orton and the Shield were going to dismember Bryam a cavalry of lower card WWE superstars hit the ring and saved the day. The scene was a wild one and this week’s RAW should see an even bigger line in the sand drawn by WWE Chief Operating Officer Triple H and WWE Vice President Stephanie McMahon.
WWE needs to make this match have different angle than just teasing Bryan winning the title again and getting the victory cheated out of his hands by an disapproving Triple H and company. The Battleground build does have a new path with Orton also chasing the WWE title which is currently vacant. WWE played a little too much of a 'boy who called wolf' tone with the clever Night of Champions reversal finish on the WWE title match. So how do they cast another net of appeal for the WWE title war between Bryan and Orton with Triple H overseeing the fight?
No matter what WWE fans should tune into see to Daniel Bryan's underdog character grow as the lead babyface of the company, despite some the complaints of some fans who think Bryan is genuinely being suppressed.
Chicago Made Punk
Chicago’s own hometown hero CM Punk is advertised to appear on RAW tonight after missing last week’s RAW which was the night after he got smashed through a table on the Night of Champions pay per view by Ryback. The monster Ryback came to aid of Punk’s former friend Paul Heyman in a 2-on-1 Handicap Elimination Match at Night of Champions, and in the process became the new ‘Heyman Guy’.
Punk’s quest to destroy Heyman will continue with a new obstacle in Ryback, but the Second City Saint is reportedly working injured which is another reason why he did not appear on RAW or Smackdown last week. According to several reports, Punk is dealing ankle and knee issues. The Windy City fans will certainly be chanting for their superhero in red stars and baby blue bars, CM Punk. WWE has seen a small yet noticeable revival of their Divas division recently with the success of the ‘Total Divas’ reality show on the E! Network. Now the reigning WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee called out all of the ladies who appeared on the successful show, and it’s added a hook of interest to all divas segments on WWE TV. The next match-up in this program looks to see Natalya tangle with AJ for the Divas title. Look for Nattie to get in the ring tonight with AJ returning the commentary booth for some smart alec humor, which was very entertaining last week on RAW.
Also on RAW look for developments on these stories
- The Rhodes Family war against Triple H and Stephanie McMahon will continue in some capacity. Could we see Cody Rhodes return to the WWE ring even though he was unjustly fired from the company earlier this month?
- The Shield did get laid out last week on RAW. Shield members Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns are holding the WWE Tag Team Championship and Dean Ambrose has the WWE United States title. Dolph Ziggler got a big non-title win over Ambrose and the Uso super-kicked Reigns out of his boots in the show-closing fracas. After getting kicked out of the ring, could they return to have some challengers for their championship gold?
- Chicago should provide a hot electric crowd for the WWE RAW broadcast. This also adds to the overall feeling of a live televised RAW.
