Tonight, September 15, was the sixth annual Night of Champions pay per view, presented by WWE. Night of Champions was originally a subtitle for the July 2007 Vengeance pay per view before branching off into its own standalone pay per view in 2008. Tonight's show was held in the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Here are the results.
In the online pre-show match that happened before Night of Champions went on the air, The Prime Time Players (Darren Young & Titus O’Neill) won a five team Tag Team Turmoil to earn a WWE Tag Team Championship match later in the evening.
- Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) beat 3MB (Drew McIntyre & Heath Slater) in the first match.
- The Real Americans (Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro) beat Tons Funk. Swagger made Clay tap out to the Patriot Lock.
- The Real Americans beat Jimmy & Jey Uso. Swagger made an Uso tap out the Patriot Lock.
- The Prime Time Players beat The Real Americans. Young pinned Swagger after hitting the Gut Check.
WWE COO Triple H opened the pay per view and announced the WWE Title bout tonight would be one-on-one and no interference from either side will be allowed. Paul Heyman and WWE Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel then came to the ring, and Heyman pleaded with Triple H to cancel their handicap match against CM Punk for later in the night. Triple H instead made the match a no disqualifications match. Axel then stepped up Triple H, so he booked him in an Intercontinental Title match immediately.
WWE Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel pinned Kofi Kingston after hitting a hangman’s neckbreaker.
WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee defeated Natalya Neidhart, Naomi and Brie Bella in a fatal four way match. AJ made Natalya tap out to the Black Widow.
Rob Van Dam defeated World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio by disqualification when Del Rio refused to let go of the cross armbreaker after Van Dam reached the ropes. Post-match, Del Rio continued to attack Van Dam until Ricardo Rodriguez ran to the ring and attacked Del Rio with a chair. Van Dam then hit Del Rio with a Van Terminator with Rodriguez’ help.
The Miz made Fandango tap out the Figure 4 in a previously unscheduled match.
WWE Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel and Paul Heyman beat CM Punk in a handicap, no disqualifications match. Punk made Axel tap out the Anaconda Vice. Punk then got his hands on Heyman laid a beating on him until Ryback showed up and drove Punk through a table. He then put Heyman on top for the pinfall victory.
WWE United States Champion Dean Ambrose pinned Dolph Ziggler after hitting the bulldog driver.
Daniel Bryan defeated WWE Champion Randy Orton to win the Championship. Bryan pinned Orton after hitting a running knee to the face.
