The first WWE Monday Night Raw of 2013 ended with an explosive finale that included CM Punk dropping another of his legendary pipe bombs followed up by The Rock coming down and the two having an exciting promo, setting up their Royal Rumble WWE Championship match. The confrontation on Jan. 7 all ended with a Rock Bottom to end the show.
The entire situation is interesting. CM Punk continues to establish himself as a bad guy, saying he doesn't care about the fans, that he doesn't wrestle for the fans, and that the fans will never win as long as he is the champion. His promo, aimed at the fans, was one of the best heal promos in a long time.
However, he also made some great points in his promo, talking about how Brodus Clay is a monster who acts like a goof to make the fans happy, knowing that is the only way he will get pushed. He talked about how an invisible child named Little Jimmy gets more Raw screen time than someone who busts their butt like Tyson Kidd.
This was a strange mix between CM Punk talking for the people and CM Punk talking down to the people.
That brought out The Rock, who took up for the fans and promised one thing - to kick Punk's butt.
It was a unique promo, one that set up The Rock as the hero, fighting for the people, and Punk as the underdog, fighting by himself. There is also the fact that this also came after The Shield helped Punk beat Ryback in their TLC match, proving that Punk will do anything he can to keep his title.
2013 has opened with the biggest feud in the WWE in a long time, and both CM Punk and The Rock brought their A-game to WWE Monday Night Raw.
