There has been a clear line of top notch superstars in the WWE. Bruno Sammartino led to Hulk Hogan which led to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and now it is John Cena’s time in the sun. While there were moments in between each of these stars where others rode to the top, these four men were the best of the WWE. However, the New York Post reported on Saturday that Austin said that he was better than Hulk Hogan.
According to Austin, Hulk Hogan wrestled for 30 years compared to his 15 years and more people know Hogan than Austin, but that Austin took the WWE to heights that it never reached before. That point can easily be argued, but Austin did say that if you asked Hogan, the answer would be different. He said Hogan probably believes he was better than Austin, but the interviewer was asking Austin’s opinion.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin is the man who helped bring in the Attitude Era, one of the most successful eras in professional wrestling history. It allowed the WWE to become a billion dollar industry and took WCW out of business. All of this was weight that rested on the shoulders of the man known as The Rattlesnake. There have also been wrestlers in agreement, including CM Punk, who said Austin was better “by a landslide,” and Vince McMahon, who called Austin the “biggest superstar in WWE history.”
However, on the other side of the argument, Hulk Hogan is who made the WWE a popular mainstream form of entertainment for the first time ever. It was Hogan who helped make the first Wrestlemania a success. McMahon said that he would have lost the company if Wrestlemania failed, but he succeeded and Hogan was responsible for a lot of that. Hogan made the WWE cool for the first time, and while he was never as good in the ring as Austin, the argument for the best of all time is a case of opinion.
