The WWE universe got the chance to vote for the guest referee for the Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton match inside the Hell in a Cell structure at the next WWE pay-per-view. According to WWE.com on Oct. 7, the referee that was voted in was Shawn Michaels.
The fans were given three options, all retired Hall of Fame wrestlers, to choose from. They were former six-time world champion Booker T, former WWF champion Bob Backlund and Shawn Michaels. It was easy to see who the winner was going to be before the voting ever started.
All three men got a chance to sell themselves. Booker T played the role of the company man, Backlund was as crazy as usual, and Michaels was just himself. Sure enough, Michaels picked up over 60 percent of the votes, while surprisingly Backlund grabbed over 30 percent himself.
This is a fantastic storytelling device. Shawn Michaels and Triple H are best friends. They are both members of the fabled Kilq, started Degeneration X together and remain close friends. Michaels also is the man who trained Daniel Bryan when he was starting out in the business. Michaels made sure the crowd knew that before they voted.
Now, Michaels returns at “WWE Hell in a Cell” to referee the match, and is planted directly in the middle of the power struggle between Triple H and Daniel Bryan. What is great is that he could go either way – straight down the middle or as another of Triple H’s henchmen.
“WWE Hell in a Cell” takes place on Oct. 27 on pay-per-view.
