A WWE groundbreaking announcement was made on the night of Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 via live stream from CES 2014 in Las Vegas. Chairman and CEO of WWE Vince McMahon spoke at the presentation along with several other superstars about why "today is a great day to be a WWE fan." With that the brand new network was announced to fans, with a launch date scheduled for Feb. 24, 2014.
According to PWTorch.com on Jan. 8, Vince McMahon officially announced the official launch of the WWE Network with Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer of WWE Michele Wootson speaking about the new network. It will be a new source of content delivery to fans around the world. It will be the first service to offer "24/7 streaming content" and on-demand video content accessible from any device. All twelve live WWE pay-per-view events will be included as part of the network. Also included will be brand new programs such as Raw and SmackDown pre and post-shows, WWE Countdown, WWE Legends House, The Monday Night War: Raw vs. Nitro and WrestleMania Rewind.
The network will include access over 100,000 hours in the content library. Some of the content mentioned will be previous pay-per-views. The charge for the network is set at just $9.99 a month. It was noted that to purchase all twelve pay-per-views is $675 annually, so the $9.99 a month is certainly a nice price reduction. The iOS, ROKU, Android, Xbox, Kindle Fire and PS4 will be among the devices that content can be accessed and streamed on.
Stephanie McMahon also appeared as part of the presentation to discuss more about what fans can expect on the new network. There will be live "pre" and "post" shows for the Raw and SmackDown shows. These shows will cover the behind the scenes of what goes on before and after the televised shows. There will also be more coverage of the NXT show which foreshadows the newest superstars and divas who will be making it to the main roster.
The new show "Legends House," will feature eight former wrestling superstars such as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Jimmy Hart, Mean Gene Okerlund and Tony Atlas living under one roof. A video package showed how the various legends and personalities from WWE history try to co-exist in the same home together. There will also be a great historic look-back at previous WrestleMania moments with the new show "WrestleMania Rewind." Among the superstars shown on the video package were Hulk Hogan, Andrew the Giant, The Undertaker, John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Macho Man Randy Savage and Shawn Michaels.
Triple H and Shawn Michaels also arrived out on stage in classic D-Generation X fashion, dressed in their DX gear and tossing out glow light sticks to the crowd. They presented "WWE Countdown" with a trademark DX promo speech finishing with "If you're not down with that, we've got two words for ya -- watch it!" The new show will count down some of the top aspects of WWE history such as finishing moves, greatest managers, wrestling backstabs, and catch phrases. The WWE Universe will vote on the various categories to determine the rankings ahead of the show. Another show will cover the epic "Monday Night War" which took place in the 90's between Vince McMahon's WWE and Ted Turner's WCW pro wrestling companies.
The undeniable leader of the "Attitude Era," Stone Cold Steve Austin came out on stage to close out the presentation. He talked about how it's a great time to be a part of WWE and that they love their fans more than any other organization around. Austin closed things out before more of the features of the content streaming service were discussed including the ability to synchronize programs across devices, see social media interactions during live shows and more. In addition to U.S., countries such as New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as other countries will get the network this year and into 2015.
