Road Warrior Animal did a recent interview and talked a lot about how he and Hawk developed their gimmick and their experience in the WWE. According to prowrestling.com on Nov. 3, it was Hawk who came up with their look.
Animal, whose real name is Joe Laurinaitis, it is the brother of former WWE talent John Laurinaitis and the father of St. Louis Rams star James Laurinaitis. He and Road Warrior Hawk got their start in the regional system and developed their look while working with Mid South owner Cowboy Bill Watts and Ole Anderson.
He said they had just decided to paint the face of The Missing Link and thought Hawk and Animal should paint their faces as well. That is when Hawk thought that Animal could have a Mohawk and Hawk could have a reverse-Mohawk so it looked like their heads could plug into each other. Animal thought it was crazy but did it and then came up with the idea to wear spikes to the ring.
He said that when they chose to leave the NWA for the WWE, they were told they needed to change their name. He said that Vince McMahon told them that no one outside of the NWA knew who they were, so it wouldn’t matter. When Animal convinced him otherwise, McMahon said fans would confuse the Road Warriors with the Ultimate Warrior, so they needed a new name anyway.
Animal came up with The Legion of Doom, which was a faction they were in during their NWA stay with wrestlers like Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Arn Anderson, Matt Borne and others. Now, to this day, many people only know The Road Warriors as The Legion of Doom.
