According to a July 30 report from Cageside Seats, next month's SummerSlam pay-per-view card continues to build with intriguing matches, as Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns and Jack Swagger vs. Rusev have been made official for the main card. Both bouts were confirmed during this week's taping of Smackdown, which airs Aug. 1 on the SyFy channel. SummerSlam is set for Aug. 17 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
During this week's Smackdown episode, Swagger defeated Cesaro, before Lana and Rusev emerged from backstage to confirm that they will be appearing at SummerSlam. Swagger, a former member of the We The People tag-team, takes on Rusev in a Flag Match that will likely end up in the heel's favor. Rusev hasn't yet lost in his young pro wrestling career under the WWE banner, so he's not likely to lose to Swagger. Rusev is being built up into an unstoppable villain, so the WWE probably won't script him to lose until he gets matches up with a top babyface such as John Cena or Roman Reigns.
In the meantime, Rusev is slowly climbing the ranks. He holds wins over the likes of Big E, R-Truth and Zack Ryder. He has been feuding with Swagger for months, and the SummerSlam match is a rematch from the Battleground pay-per-view bout that Rusev also won. Rusev's Russian ties earns him cheap heat from WWE Universe, but it is what it is. His feud with Swagger is a fun one, so the WWE is milking it for all its worth.
As for the Reigns vs. Orton match, the feud is a relatively new one. Orton told Triple H that he wants a title shot, and the response was that he won't receive that opportunity as long as Reigns is around. Triple H told Orton that he would need to defeat Reigns to earn another crack at the title.
That said, Orton vs. Reigns is a bit of a No. 1 contender's bout, to determine who might earn a championship fight sometime in the near future. Since Reigns is getting a major push as a top babyface, the plan is to have him reign supreme at SummerSlam. With Wrestlemania 31 just around the corner, Reigns is probably going to get the opportunity to fight for the title there, against the winner of the SummerSlam main event between Brock Lesnar and Cena.
