In the ‘80s, one of the hottest tag teams in the WWE to never win the world tag team titles was the Rockers. Despite their lack of success as a team, Shawn Michaels went on to a Hall of Fame career. According to Rajah on Oct. 26, Marty Jannetty recently did a shoot interview where he explained how the breakup occurred.
Everyone knows what happened in the storyline, as a miscommunication between the team at the “Survivor Series” led to an angry Shawn Michaels to turn bad and attack his partner on Brutus Beefcake’s “Barber Shop” talk show. That ended with Michaels superkicking Jannetty and throwing him through a window.
Jannetty said what led to this was the moment he and Michaels learned they were being paid a lot less than other wrestlers for a commercial. He and Michaels approached Vince McMahon and made their demands or they would leave. The WWE did not buy into their bluff and said they could leave after “Survivor Series.”
However, while McMahon had no problems parting with The Rockers, he wanted to keep Shawn Michaels. The “Survivor Series” match was booked to have Jannetty accidentally kick Michaels in the face, causing the elimination. That led to their breakup during the “Barber Shop.”
The WWE stuck with both men for a short time and it was supposed to culminate with a Wrestlemania VIII match between the former partners. However, Marty Jannetty was arrested for attacking a police officer and house arrest led to his release from the WWE.
