John Cena had to have surgery to repair a torn triceps. His recovery time was supposed to keep him out of action until January 2014, but WWE.com reported on Oct. 7 that he will actually return in three weeks at the “Hell in a Cell” pay-per-view.
At first, it seemed like a swerve.
Alberto Del Rio was backstage and was flirting with Vickie Guerrero, trying to convince her to give him an easy match on “WWE Monday Night Raw.” When he left, he made a sarcastic gesture, and Vickie saw it. This caused her to announce that Del Rio’s opponent was his former ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez.
Then, before the match started, Vickie announced that Alberto Del Rio will defend his world title against John Cena at the “Hell in a Cell” pay-per-view. Del Rio flipped out and Rodriguez picked up the sneak win with a roll up. Del Rio gained vengeance by breaking the arm of Rodriguez after the match.
It seemed like Vickie might have just announced that to throw off Del Rio, and it seemed like it could have been a trick. However, after the match, the announcers followed up and said it was true and then John Cena tweeted that he was coming back early.
This isn’t a real surprise, as Cena has always recovered quickly from injuries and the WWE’s ratings have dropped since “Monday Night Football” started back up again, so he is coming back just in time.
