WWE news: John Cena expected to drop belt to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam

According to a July 22 report from Cageside Seats, Brock Lesnar appeared on this week's episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, to start a feud with current WWE Heavyweight Champion John Cena. Just one day after Cena reigned supreme in the main event of WWE Battleground, Lesnar took center stage on Monday Night Raw to confirm that he'll be competing for the title next month at SummerSlam.

Lesnar, 37, is essentially a part-time performer for the WWE, as he hasn't wrestled since defeating The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 30. Since the first batch of subscriptions to the WWE Network expires this September, the WWE is using Lesnar to make sure wrestling fans re-up on their contracts. Lesnar is easily the most popular heel in the WWE, so his confirmation that he'll be wrestling at SummerSlam is big news.

Lesnar vs. Cena will arguably be the most-anticipated bout of the summer, as its a rubber match to cap off one of the greatest trilogies in WWE history. Lesnar and Cena have battled each other twice before, with each man winning once. SummerSlam will determine who will go home the winner of the trilogy. At present time, the plan is for Cena to drop the belt to Lesnar at SummerSlam, which would put an end to the 15-time champ's latest run as WWE heavyweight champ.

Cena dropping the belt to Lesnar would set up a bout between "The Beast Incarnate" and Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 31, in what would be a match for the WWE Heavyweight Championship. Right now, Cena is the WWE's top babyface character, which Lesnar is its most popular heel. However, the WWE is slowly setting up Reigns to take over as the face of the WWE. Reigns, 29, is eight years younger than Cena.

Reigns is being groomed as the next big thing in the WWE, and possible successor to Cena as top babyface in the promotion. The table is set for Cena to drop the belt to Lesnar at SummerSlam, only to have Reigns win it at Wrestlemania 31. Even though Lesnar vs. Cena has a predictable ending, it should still be must-see television to watch how it all goes down. Elsewhere at SummerSlam, Stephanie McMahon takes on Brie Bella and Reigns fights Randy Orton.
