Ever since WWE Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross and the WWE parted ways, there have been a lot of rumors about where he might end up next. Instead of jumping back into announcing for another wrestling company, Ross began writing for Fox Sports and started one of the best professional wrestling podcasts on the Internet. However, PWS reported on Wednesday that Jim Ross is finally returning to announcing, but it will be for an MMA PPV.
The event is the Battlegrounds MMA pay-per-view, which will take place at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The event will take place on Oct. 3 and feature a one-night elimination tournament consisting of eight fighters. In some huge news, not only will Jim Ross be one of the commentators, but he will be joined by former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen.
Sonnen is currently serving a two year suspension from MMA and was fired by the UFC after he failed three drug tests, two of which came in 2014. Sonnen has some solid announcing experience, as he served as the MMA analysist for Fox Sports, however Fox also fired Sonnen after his multiple drug tests. The failed drug tests were for HGH, EPO and hCG, all performance enhancing drugs.
The eight man tournament will feature Dennis “Superman” Hallman, Cody “AK Kid” McKenzie, Chris Honeycutt, Brock Larson, Luigi “The Italian Tank” Fioravanti, David “Bulletproof” Mitchell, Roan “Jucao” Carneiro and Trey “That Just Happened?” Houston. Ross, who lives in Oklahoma, said that announcing an MMA event is something he has always wanted to do and this could be the launching of a new broadcasting career.
