According to an Aug. 16 report from Cageside Seats, former WWE heavyweight champ, Daniel Bryan, isn't happy the WWE's creative team scripted an awkward love affair storyline into the ongoing feud between his wife, Brie Bella, and WWE head honcho Stephanie McMahon. Bryan, who is currently sidelined with a neck injury, says the storyline was stupid and groan-worthy.
On the most recent episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, the WWE needed Bella to slap a non-wrestler to hype up her SummerSlam bout with McMahon. This week's episode of WWE Monday Night Raw was the SummerSlam go-home show, so the WWE needed to tie up all the loose storylines heading into the pay-per-view. To make that happen, the WWE had fast-rising divas superstar, Megan Miller, walk out to the ring and tell the crowd that she is Bryan's physical therapist.
Miller made the shocking revelation that Bryan had an affair with her, during his sessions to rehab from neck surgery. Of course, it was all part of the script and Bryan never cheated on Bella in real life. However, the segment drew real heat from the crowd and Bryan was legitimately annoyed by it. Bella walked out to the ring and slapped Miller in the face, before turning her attention to McMahon.
Bella, the real life twin sister of WWE Divas star Nikki Bella, was upset with McMahon because the WWE boss was mocking her for being cheated on. The segment was supposed to hype McMahon's feud with Bella, but most fans and WWE superstars ripped the spot for being a weak link in what was an otherwise solid angle heading into the pay-per-view.
Bryan appeared to be annoyed by the storyline, but he got over it after a short time. He told IGN that the love affair angle didn't really work in the Bella vs. McMahon feud because it had too many flaws. Bryan eventually let it roll off his shoulder, because he has always had a laid-back personality and doesn't let anything bother him.
Bella hasn't made any official comment on the segment. However, there's not much Bryan and Bella can do about it. WWE superstars are required to go along with the storylines the promotion creates for them, and the athletes themselves aren't allowed to have much creative input.
Bella and McMahon are set to officially wrap up their feud on the WWE SummerSlam 2014 main card, while Bryan is expected to make his return at next year's Royal Rumble. Bryan is expected to have a second neck surgery, to fix lingering problems with the first time he was worked on. As for Miller, it's possible she'll be featured as a WWE Divas Division superstar in the near future. She hasn't commented on the segment.
