WWE legend Chris Jericho appeared on Busted Open Radio on XM-Sirius and talked about his career, his current focus and also touched on the current state of wrestling. According to prowrestling.com on Nov. 3, he said that Daniel Bryan was a rare case in the WWE.
Jericho said that anyone can be the face of the company of the WWE gives them the chance. He mentioned that the WWE has built their own superstars in the past, but Bryan did it on his own and his rise to the main event was organic and something the fans demanded.
Jericho said that he feels it all began at Wrestlemania when he lost in 18 seconds to Sheamus and the fans were angry and started getting behind Bryan more and more over time. Finally, the WWE had no choice but to take Bryan seriously and put him into the main event scene.
He said the WWE needs to find someone who can be the new face, someone different than John Cena. Jericho said that the only way they could move on from Hulk Hogan was to find someone different, and that ended up being Bret Hart.
This makes sense, especially the talk of how and why Bryan became so popular. Stone Cold Steve Austin became a star organically as well, rising after his Wrestlemania loss to Bret Hart and then the fans bought into his persona, which contrasted to The Rock, who was brought in to be a star but was hated for a long time until he proved himself.
Chris Jericho also compared Bryan to himself. When Y2J came to the WWE, he got a huge introduction and then was losing to Stevie Richards a few weeks later. There was even the moment where he beat Triple H for the WWE title and then had to give up the belt a few minutes later – also at the end of the show, just like what happened with Bryan.
Jericho said that Eddie Guerrero once told him that the cream will always rise to the top and to just be patient and keep a good attitude. He said that he was ready to quit before he learned he was in line for the world title, he just had to keep working and do his best.
