The WWE sent out a press release on March 17 announcing the induction of actor Mr. T into the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame class. Mr. T was involved in the first two Wrestlemania events and will enter the Hall of Fame as a celebrity inductee.
In the first Wrestlemania event, Mr. T was one of many celebrities to help make the wrestling show the biggest the world had ever seen at the time. He teamed with Hulk Hogan in a match against Rowdy Roddy Piper and "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff.
The actor was already friends with Hulk Hogan thanks to the two appearing together in the movie "Rocky III." Mr. T was also, at the time, a major television star thanks to the TV show "The A-Team."
At the second Wrestlemania show, Mr. T took on Rowdy Roddy Piper in a boxing match. The match ended when Piper lost control of his temper and body slammed Mr. T, causing a disqualification.
In interviews on the WWE Network, reminiscing about the shows, Piper has revealed that he and Mr. T did not get along at all during that period because Piper felt that celebrities should never come to a wrestling show and get put over the wrestlers. Despite this, Mr. T was a large reason that the first Wrestlemania was so popular.
Originally, the WWE rumors were that the actual match from the first Wrestlemania would be inducted, but it appears that is not the case as Mr. T will enter the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame on his own. The WWE had been trying for years to invite Mr. T back but he had rejected their offers until now.
“WWE is honored to have Mr. T join the WWE Hall of Fame,” Vince McMahon said in the press release. “His WWE appearances were instrumental in helping to establish WrestleMania as the pop-culture phenomenon it is today.”
The 2014 WWE Hall of Fame will air live on the WWE Network on April 5. Mr. T joins Ultimate Warrior, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Lita, Paul Bearer and Carlos Colon in the 2014 class.
