The WWE Battleground 2013 pay-per-view arrives on Sunday, Oct. 6, with a stacked match card on the way. Among the PPV matches that fans will be looking forward to are a rematch involving Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton for the vacated WWE Championship, and a hardcore rules match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Just recently, another title match was added to the lineup as well.
An Oct. 2 report via WrestlingInc.com notes that the newest match added to the Battleground matches will be R-Truth versus Curtis Axel for the Intercontinental Championship. Axel will likely have manager Paul Heyman at ringside during the title match. Truth earned this latest title shot after defeating Axel this past Monday on Raw. CM Punk's theme music playing during the match helped to distract Axel enough so that Truth could claim the big victory. He would later demand a title shot from Raw General Manager Brad Maddox backstage.
R-Truth, real name Ron Killings, has never won the Intercontinental Championship, but has held the WWE United States Championship once, and the Hardcore Championship (when it still existed) twice. In addition, he was half of the tag team champions along with Kofi Kingston for one reign. Axel has held the IC belt for a reign of over 108 days now, making it the longest reign of the past nine Intercontinental Champions. Cody Rhodes held the belt for 236 days, reigning from August 2011 through early April 2012.
This match now joins five others on the main PPV card, including Bryan vs. Orton, Alberto Del Rio vs. Rob Van Dam, CM Punk vs. Ryback, and AJ Lee vs. Brie Bella. In addition, there's a special kick-off match scheduled for the Battleground live stream pre-show online which will feature Dolph Ziggler vs. Damien Sandow with no special stipulations announced, as of this report.
WWE Battleground 2013 pay-per-view begins at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday, Oct. 6, with the kick-off show at 7:30 p.m. EST online.
