A recent WWE 2K14 roster update indicates that the first openly-gay active pro wrestling star, Darren Young, will be a part of the playable wrestlers in the new video game. The upcoming game, scheduled for release in just a few months on Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, will feature Young, a member of the tag team known as "The Prime Time Players."
An Aug. 17 CinemaBlend.com report indicates that 2K Games tweeted about the big news while also congratulating Young for his "brave personal announcement." The 2K Games Twitter also included a link to an image showing off Young's character from the upcoming wrestling video game. Young joins a roster which also include a large number of pro wrestling stars from a special "30 Years of WrestleMania" mode. They include superstars such as Hulk Hogan, John Cena, The Undertaker, The Rock, and Shawn Michaels.
Darren Young has been a member of the pro wrestling world since a debut in 2002. He first appeared with World Wrestling Entertainment as early as 2005-06 in "dark matches" for various shows including Raw and SmackDown. Young, real name Fredrick Rosser, went on to sign a developmental contract with the pro wrestling company in 2009, and then appeared on the NXT show where aspiring young wrestlers were competing to get a spot on the main roster. Young was mentored by WWE pro wrestler, CM Punk, during his time on the show, but the two didn't get along due to Punk's current storyline.
Young went on to join the Nexus, a faction that was assembled by another NXT star, Wade Barrett, and fellow NXT wrestlers. Young returned to NXT from 2011 to 2012, and ended up forming a partnership with fellow new NXT star, Titus O'Neil, before the duo went on to become the Prime Time Players, a tag team worth "millions of dollars."
Darren Young made the announcement that he was gay on Aug. 15, 2013. The announcement made him the first active pro wrestler to publicly come out while signed to a major pro wrestling promotion. WWE has been supportive of Young since the news, and now fans will get the chance to use him as one of the wrestlers in 2K14's first-ever WWE video game.
