WSU Football | Kenny Alfred tapped for East-West Shrine game

PULLMAN, WA - Washington State University senior center Kenny Alfred has been selected to compete in the 85th annual East-West Shrine Game. The announcement was made Tuesday.

Alfred will join the West squad for the annual game that will be held January 23, 2010 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL.

The Gig Harbor, WA, student/athlete has started all 10 games for the Cougars this season, garnering WSU's most outstanding offensive player award six times.

This has been a challenging season for both head Coach Paul Wulff and offensive line Coach Harold Etheridge. The OL has been devastated by injuries virtually every week since fall camp began. Alfred and right tackle Micah Hannam are the only two players to have started every game. The efficiency of the offensive line unit is proportional to the comfort level between players. It's critical each is familiar with how the other goes about their job. Alfred has been integral on and off the field helping all five guys up front work together as one.

With his bachelor's degree in English already in hand, Kenny Alfred will compete in the final two games this, his senior year as he has throughout a distinguished college football career at Washington State. Alfred will be frustrating defensive tackles hoping to make a stop.

Alfred doesn't just play, he makes plays.

He is also on the Rimington Trophy Watch List for the third-straight year, given annually to the nation's most outstanding center. Last month Alfred was named to Phil Steele's Midseason All-Pacific-10 Conference second team.

Alfred is the 17th Cougar since 2000 to be selected to play in the Shrine Game, the most recent being former Cougar Jed Collins in 2007. It also marks the 28th straight season a Cougar senior has participated in a postseason all-star game since 1981.

It's an incredible honor. I'm extremely excited about it. It's a special thing that I know not many people get to participate in and I'm going to enjoy every second of it."
