What's your story? Is it interesting?
You should be staring at a list of strength words that describe you. If not, go back a post (click here) and make your list. Go on, I'll wait.
We're going to work on the "About Me" part of your profile using that list of strength words.
The key to a good profile is that it brings up images in the mind of the reader. It tells a story - a story that the reader would like to experience! If your profile doesn't tell a story, then it's going to be boring. Who wants to experience boredom? No one!
So, your profile could open with:
"Hi, I'm Susie and I'm cheerful, motivated, and helpful."
But that's just boring. Sounds nice, but really not compelling at all.
Scan through your list and think about stories about yourself that describe why you are that adjective. You'll only need three or four.
- Susie is cheerful. She works as a dental receptionist and feels that being cheerful helps calm the nerves of the patients.
- Susie is motivated. She is training toward her first marathon in September and wakes up to run at 5 am daily.
- Susie is helpful. Every Wednesday night she works at the battered women's shelter cooking dinner for the residents.
Now, take those stories and make them into your profile.
Now Susie's profile reads:
I never thought I'd be a runner, but since signing up for the September 5k, I've been getting up every morning at 5 am to run and loving it! Who knew? After my shower, it's off to work. Since I work in a place nobody wants to visit (the dentist!), I try to maintain as cheerful a personality as possible while there. It really takes the edge off for patients who are terrified of being there when the first face they see when they walk in the door is one that's smiling ear to ear and happy to see them. Once a week I volunteer at the battered women's shelter, where I cook my world famous chili. Okay, maybe it's not world famous but the residents love it!
Next in the series... writing your "About My Match" paragraph....
