Writing can be a powerful therapeutic tool to encourage expression of thoughts and emotions buried deep inside. Counseling groups often incorporate an aspect of writing to allow members to put into words what is often difficult to say. Then sharing this in the safety of the group can in many cases serve as the catalyst for insights and even a therapeutic breakthrough.
One location in the area where this is practiced is Wellness Within - a mind-body wellness center for patients, survivors, and families coping with the stress of cancer. They offer several programs and one in particular, Expressive Arts, has a course titled "Writing as a Path to Healing." It is a recurring event offered every two weeks on Wednesday from 5 pm - 7 pm at the following address:
609 Oak Street, Roseville, CA 95678
Course description from website:
Don’t Fight It, Just Write It!
Words are powerful things. They bring laughter, relief and release when put on paper. Come and use them to give voice to your personal journey. You can write your “art out” in a comfortable, supportive environment. The group will use Pat Schneider’s AWA methods as inspiration and all writing is treated as fiction and held confidential by members. Prompts in the form of poems, photos, music, and found objects are provided to inspire the group. Join us and discover what your words can do. Sessions facilitated by Lisa Morgan, writer and cancer survivor, and Jan Haag, local SCC journalism instructor, editor, and writer. We all have a unique voice and a story to tell. Join us and discover what your words can do. Participants 18 and over welcome.
