Writing a Radio Play-Part 1: All about the 4 friends!!!

Hello!!! This is James Ouellette, back with another article!!!! This week, I wanted to write a little bit more about how I came up with some of the characters for my radio play. To start off, I found it pretty easy, actually, because the 4 main characters (Delta, Emily, James, and Harold) are all people in my theater group. It was their crazy personalities and fun-loving nature that I wanted to expand upon and turn into 4 of the most hysterical people you would ever hope to meet. Taking hints from what I already knew about them, I created a group of characters that would serve as the 4 leads of sorts.

The process of writing this play began one day at the end of class when the group sat down and tried to work out a plot for this play. Jean, our wonderful instructor, asked me who my favorite singer was and I replied “Susan Boyle.” Someone suggested we have the play revolve around a party. When asked if we wanted the party to be for Susan Boyle or for me, the group said they would rather have the party be for me; however, I was unsure, but eventually, I got used to it.

After working out the initial plot details, we did an improvisation that would serve as a foundation on which to build the story. From this initial skit, I began to work out the personalities of James, Delta, Emily, and Harold. There was an abundance of personality traits, likes, and even dislikes upon which to shape the real life people into their quirky stage counterparts. For instance, Emily’s feelings toward actress/singer Kristin Chenoweth was incorporated into the show as a sort of inside joke, as was Delta’s love of country singer Luke Bryan.

Stay tuned for Part 2: all about the celebrities!!!! Please feel free to comment; you can also read my other articles and you’ll find my email address in my bio. You can email me suggestions about what you think I should write about!!! Have a great night/day!!!!!
