Writers Guild nominates 'Hugo,' 'The Help,' more for Adapted Screenplay Award

The Writers Guild announced its nominees for the annual Writers Guild Awards on Thursday, and five motion pictures have been nominated in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay. All five nominated movies are adapted from books.

The five nominees are:

The Descendants, Screenplay by Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash; Based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemming; Fox Searchlight

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Screenplay by Steven Zaillian; Based on the novel by Stieg Larsson, originally published by Norstedts; Columbia Pictures

The Help, Screenplay by Tate Taylor; Based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett; DreamWorks Pictures

Hugo, Screenplay by John Logan; Based on the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick; Paramount Pictures

Moneyball, Screenplay by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin; Story by Stan Chervin; Based on the book by Michael Lewis; Columbia Pictures

According to the Writers Guild, the rules require that a film be written under the guild's Minimum Basic Agreement or under an agreement arranged with affiliated foreign guilds in order to qualify for nomination.

Last year, the Adapted Screenplay Writers Guild Award went to The Social Network scripted by Aaron Sorkin and based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich.
