Writer’s Digest has announced a new writing contest for self-published writers. Over $17,000 in prizes is available.
Whether professional or amateur, this Writer’s Digest writing contest is open to the following categories:
- Mainstream/Literary Fiction
- Genre Fiction
- Nonfiction
- Inspirational
- Life Stories
- Children’s Picture books
- Middle-Grade/Young Adult books
- Reference Books
- Poetry
The Grand Prize winner will receive $3,000 cash as well as promotion in Writer’s Digest and Publisher’s Weekly. Writer’s Digest will also endorse and submit copies of the winning book to review houses such as The New York Times and The Washington Post.
Writer’s Digest will award 10 First Place winners $1000 cash and promotion in Writer’s Digest magazine as well as a featured review in Midwest Book Review.
Honorable Mentions will be promoted at www.writersdigest.com and receive $50 worth of Writer’s Digest books.

The Writer’s Loft: Helmed by the great Jerry Cleaver, author of Immediate Fiction and Professor of Professional Fiction at Northwestern University.
StoryStudio Chicago: StoryStudio’s mission is to “foster confidence and creativity in writing and storytelling through teaching, discussion, performance and community building. Writers and performers of all levels—from beginners to professionals—are invited to participate.”.
Neighborhood Writing Alliance: The Neighborhood Writing Alliance holds several weekly writing workshops in neighborhoods across the city. Registration is free.
NewTown Writers: NewTown is a gay and lesbian writers’ group with regular workshops every two weeks. Sign up now to participate in their three new workshops scheduled for April 2010.
TheUndeniables.org is an online critique group for those with restricted schedules who may not have the time to participate in a conventional classroom workshop. Registration is free. Wordpress account required.
