Writer's Digest 79th annual writing contest

The final deadline for the Writer’s Digest 79th annual writing contest is a little more than two months away.

Competition is open in the following categories:

  • Inspirational Writing
  • Memoirs/Personal Essay
  • Magazine Feature Article
  • Genre Short Story
  • Mainstream/Literary Short Story
  • Rhyming Poetry
  • Non-rhyming Poetry
  • Stage Play
  • Television/Movie Script
  • Children's/Young Adult Fiction

 The Grand Prize includes $3,000 cash and a 3-day, 2-night all-expenses paid trip to New York City to meet with editors and agents.

The Grand Prize winner and First Place winners in each category will also have their manuscripts published in the 79th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition Collection to be published November 2010.

Fees for poetry are $15 for initial entries, $10 for each additional entry. Other categories are $20 for the first manuscript, $15 for each additional. These prices apply if submitted prior to May 14, 2010.

Submissions after May 14 incur an additional $5 charge. Final deadline is June 1, 2010, after which no submissions will be accepted.

Prepare for this writing contest by taking advantage of the many resources in the Chicago area aimed at helping writers improve their craft:

The Writer’s Loft: Helmed by the great Jerry Cleaver, author of Immediate Fiction and Professor of Professional Fiction at Northwestern University.

StoryStudio Chicago: StoryStudio’s mission is to “foster confidence and creativity in writing and storytelling through teaching, discussion, performance and community building. Writers and performers of all levels—from beginners to professionals—are invited to participate.”

Neighborhood Writing Alliance: The Neighborhood Writing Alliance holds several weekly writing workshops in neighborhoods across the city. Registration is free.

NewTown Writers: NewTown is a gay and lesbian writers’ group with regular workshops every two weeks. Registration is free.

TheUndeniables.org is an online critique group for those with restricted schedules who may not have the time to participate in a conventional classroom workshop. Registration is free. Wordpress account required.
