Wrestler of the Week, June 30 - July 6

Welcome to year four of Wrestler of the Week. Much like the previous three years this will continue to be a little way to highlight an individual (or tag team as the case may be) that had a particularly banner week in terms of storyline or on-air achievement. Just like in previous years, in addition to highlighting a Wrestler of Week, two honorable mentions will also be noted. Throughout the year point totals will be tallied. Just like in year three, each week 10 points will go to the actual Wrestler of the Week, 5 points going to the first Honorable Mention and 3 going to the second Honorable Mention. At the end of the year a Wrestler of the Year will be crowned.

Wrestler of the Week

AJ Lee

The diminutive Diva surprised everyone when she walked out on WWE Monday Night RAW last week and challenged WWE Divas Champion Paige to an impromptu Title match, just like Paige had done to AJ to night after WrestleMania XXX. And just like that night when Paige when surprised AJ and took the Divas Title, AJ returned the favor and pinned Paige in the middle of the ring to regain the Championship she lost months ago. Just like that, AJ Lee is back on top of the Divas mountain in WWE.

Honorable Mention

Gail Kim

Meanwhile over in TNA Wrestling, the ladies’ championship also changed hands. Gail Kim pinned reigning Champion Angelina Love on the July 3 edition of Impact Wrestling to become a four-time TNA Knockouts Champion. The title change actually happened on June 20 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but thanks to TNA’s marathon style television tapings the date that the Title change would actually air on television was slightly in question.

Chris Jericho

Speaking of surprises, Y2J surprised the hell out of the wrestling world last week on Monday Night RAW when he interrupted The Miz’ in-ring promo and announced his return, immediately negating Miz’s return as well. He then immediately caught the ire of Bray Wyatt and his Family, which ensures that Jericho will featured in a prominent position going forward on this most recent return.

Here’s some other people who deserve some love, but won’t get the points that go with it.

The Miz…another former WWE Champion who returned to WWE on Monday Night, but immediately felt like an afterthought to Chris Jericho’s return

KUSHIDA…over in New Japan Pro Wrestling, he defeated Kota Ibushi to win the prestigious IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship

Naomichi Marufuji…also over in Japan, defeated Yuji Nagata in Pro Wrestling NOAH to win the GHC Heavyweight Championship
