Welcome to year four of Wrestler of the Week. Much like the previous three years this will continue to be a little way to highlight an individual (or tag team as the case may be) that had a particularly banner week in terms of storyline or on-air achievement. Just like in previous years, in addition to highlighting a Wrestler of Week, two honorable mentions will also be noted. Throughout the year point totals will be tallied. Just like in year three, each week 10 points will go to the actual Wrestler of the Week, 5 points going to the first Honorable Mention and 3 going to the second Honorable Mention. At the end of the year a Wrestler of the Year will be crowned.
Wrestler of the Week
On Sunday night at the Money in the Bank pay per view, John Cena captured the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a wild eight-man ladder match. Cena is now a fifteen time World Heavyweight Champion and is dangerously close to tying the unprecedented sixteen times that the legendary “Nature Boy” Ric Flair has officially held the World Championship.
In the traditional Money in the Bank contract ladder match, Rollins outlast five other men to win the vaunted WWE World Heavyweight Championship contract. It was easily Rollins’ biggest win of his career and showed that the company has incredible faith in him. Look for more big things from Rollins finishing out 2014 and into 2015.
Over in Japan this past weekend, Tanahashi defeated Tomohiro Ishii to win the NEVER Openweight Championship. It is probably Tanahashi’s biggest win as a singles star and a stamp of approval from New Japan Pro Wrestling. He is finally getting the breakout that seemingly would never come, and is now in line to follow in the footsteps of his old No Limit tag team partner Tetsuya Naito.
