Welcome to year four of Wrestler of the Week. Much like the previous three years this will continue to be a little way to highlight an individual (or tag team as the case may be) that had a particularly banner week in terms of storyline or on-air achievement. Just like in previous years, in addition to highlighting a Wrestler of Week, two honorable mentions will also be noted. Throughout the year point totals will be tallied. Just like in year three, each week 10 points will go to the actual Wrestler of the Week, 5 points going to the first Honorable Mention and 3 going to the second Honorable Mention. At the end of the year a Wrestler of the Year will be crowned.
Wrestler of the Week
The reigning and defending IWGP Heavyweight Champion continues to look like an absolute rock in the 2014 New Japan G1 Climax round-robin tournament. In recent matches in the tournament he defeated New Japan legend Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Toru Yanu and Minoru Suzuki, in a match that is touted as another Match of the Year candidate.
The reigning and defending TNA World Tag Team Champions had an awesome tag team bout against Matt & Jeff Hardy at Thursday night’s taped edition of Destination X. The show was taped back in June but it was in front of a raucous crowd in the Grand Ballroom inside the Manhattan Center in downtown New York City, which provided for an awesome atmosphere for the match and the event in general. The Wolves won the match with a sick powerbomb/top rope backstabber combo. The match is an easy candidate for Free TV Match of the Year and a great feather in the cap for the ever-evolving Wolves.
On the same Destination X television taping, the “indy legend” Low Ki made another return to TNA Wrestling. At the Destination X event he reminded everyone why they became fans of his in the first place and defeated DJ Zema Ion and Manik in a fun throwback-style triple threat match to advance to the TNA X-Division triple threat tournament finals.
