Wrestler of the Week, December 30 - January 5

Welcome to year four of Wrestler of the Week. Much like the previous three years this will continue to be a little way to highlight an individual (or tag team as the case may be) that had a particularly banner week in terms of storyline or on-air achievement. Just like in previous years, in addition to highlighting a Wrestler of Week, two honorable mentions will also be noted. Throughout the year point totals will be tallied. Just like in year three, each week 10 points will go to the actual Wrestler of the Week, 5 points going to the first Honorable Mention and 3 going to the second Honorable Mention. At the end of the year a Wrestler of the Year will be crowned.

Well this is the start of year four of Wrestler of the Year, and good Lord has time flown by. The rules stay the same as they did year three and we start fresh with new point totals. Wrestler of the year for 2013 will be announced shortly when the full award presentation for 2013 are rolled out.

Wrestler of the Week

Hiroshi Tanahashi

New Japan Pro Wrestling always presents their annual Wrestle Kingdom show on January 4 and it is their equivalent of WrestleMania. Hirohsi Tanahashi always does well at these events and rightfully so. He is widely considered on of the best pro wrestlers in the world. At Wrestle Kingdom VIII this past weekend, Tanahashi defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to win the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. The match was voted as the main event over the Okada-Naito World Title bout and once again proved that Tanahashi is New Japan’s “ace.”

Honorable Mention

Brock Lesnar

“The Beast Incarnate” stormed back onto WWE programming this past week and destroyed things like he always does. Thanks to his manager Paul Heyman, Lesnar let it known that he set his sights on the WWE World Title and then called out the roster. Mark Henry answered the call but got completely destroyed by Lesnar. He was sent through the ringside barricade and F-5ed onto the ringside floor. Anytime Lesnar shows on WWE TV, it is a special treat.

Daniel Bryan

“The American Dragon” put together one of his wrestling clinics this past week on WWE Monday Night RAW. In the night’s main event he ran the gauntlet of The Wyatt Family. He beat Luke Harper in a great first match and then pinned Erick Rowan in a quick second bout. Then when the time came to face Bray Wyatt the trio laid out Bryan for the disqualification win. Bryan then gave in to Wyatt’s demands and joined The Wyatt Family in a phenomenal moment of “sports entertainment.” The show closed with Bryan walking out with The Wyatt Family and left a great cliffhanger ending for WWE in the weeks to come.

Although only three spots get points, Wrestle Kingdom VIII produced many new Champions and they should be recognized.

Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows…the duo defeated Davey Boy Smith, Jr. & Lance Archer to win the IWGP Tag Team Championships.

Kota Ibushi…pinned Prince Fergal Devitt to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship

Satoshi Kojima…beat Rob Conway to become the new NWA World Heavyweight Championship
