WPMI-TV had plans to produce special local TV programming dedicated to Fat Tuesday (or "Mardi Gras" in French) activities scheduled to take place in their broadcast area on February 12th, the last date of the Carnival season for 2013. The station would also stream the special programming through the live video section of their official World Wide Web site.
The station's plans for the programming included broadcasts of local parades, segments from the Hampton Inn in downtown Mobile, and appearances by employees of the station wearing costumes provided by Toomey's in Mobile. The station would start broadcasting the special programming by 10:00 a.m. and stop by 2:00 p.m.
The station made time in their programming schedule for the special programming by having no plans to broadcast the final quarter of "Today", a network news program from NBC, "Live! with Kelly and Michael", a syndicated variety show, and "Days of Our Lives", a network serial from NBC, in their regular time periods (for Monday through Friday). The station also had no plans for a local 12:00 p.m. news program and no plans to broadcast a paid commercial program (or "infomercial") at 12:30 p.m.
According to the TV programming guides Zap2it, TitanTV, and TV Guide provided on Friday, February 8th, WPMI-TV was still set to broadcast the final quarter of "Today" NBC would provide on February 12th on the next calendar day between 2:35 a.m. and 3:30 a.m in accordance with their regular programming schedule. As for "Days of Our Lives" and "Live! with Kelly and Michael", neither one of the guides not have those programs listed for any other time on their schedule for WPMI-TV (SOAPnet, a cable TV and satellite TV programming service, was set to broadcast the February 12th edition of "Days of Our Lives" at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on that day. NBC would also provide the episode through the video section of their official World Wide Web site by the next calendar day.
