Would you vote for a superintendent candidate with kids in private school?

The superintendent's race in the DeKalb County school district will probably be the biggest race of the county this election. For the last several years, current superintendent Charles Warren has been serving the system. As of this election, he is retiring.

In the Democratic corner, we have Jason Mayfield, Bill Monroe, and Ed Burke. On the Republican side, we have Hugh Taylor and Steve Street. And already the questions are rolling around.

At least one of these candidates, if not more, have children in Cornerstone Christian Academy in Rainsville. While many people agree that CCA is a fantastic school, some voters believe that if a candidate is going to run for election to lead a school system, they should have enough faith that their own children would get a good education within the public school system.

Curious about what other parents/voters thought about the subject, I posed the question publicly on my Facebook wall and the responses were so varied that it's obvious the voters are split across the board.

“If a person wants their children to be taught with a Christian background, that is his prerogative. I do not believe that this, in and of itself, says anything about his qualifications as a Superintendent,” said Jeremy Lassetter, a parent of 4.

This view was echoed throughout the discussion. But Dedra Capps, co-owner of Family First Medicine in Rainsville had a unique take on it. “To me as a business owner it would be like me owning a medical clinic but not trusting anyone there enough to provide medical care for my own children.” She did acknowledge that the issue was a bit confusing but wouldn't be the only factor she used in deciding who to vote for.
