Would-be mugger schooled by his victim

There is cosmic justice after all. A would-be mugger received a healthy serving of it last Friday when he attempted to rob a driver at gunpoint on the Southwest Side of Chicago (h/t The Blaze).

Instead of cash, 24-year-old Anthony Miranda came away with two black eyes and a gunshot wound to the leg for his trouble. That is because his “victim,” who was seated when the mugger drew his weapon, turned out to be a 6-foot-2-inch, 250-pound mixed martial arts fighter.

The man, identified by the Chicago Sun-Times simply as Justin, told reporters he was waiting in his parked car for a friend at around 11:30 p.m. when Miranda approached and asked for a light. When Justin replied he was not a smoker, Miranda drew his gun, holding it against Justin’s head and demanding money. Justin handed over the $30 in cash he was carrying.

But Miranda was not satisfied. He ordered Justin out of his car—which turned out to be the perp’s undoing. The ultimate fighting champion managed to wrestle the gun away from Miranda. In the scuffle, a round was discharged, striking the mugger in the ankle.

Miranda was taken to an area hospital and is in police custody. The Sun-Times reports that the man has past felony convictions and that he is being held on $350,000 bond. A video report from Chicago ABC affiliate WLS-TV can be found here.
