The first day of HARD Summer finished much different than how it started. The rain wouldn't be stopped, the police presence had lightened, and those with any fear about how this year's festival was going to in its new location were eased. Saturday showcased plenty of talent across Whittier Narrows Recreational Park, from the two giant stages to the three intimate tents. Headliners Jack U sent the biggest crowd home happy, but fellow OWSLA'ers The M Machine expanded a few minds on the other side of the field with their closing set.
Genres were pushed around all day, with hip-hop acts A$AP MOB and Pusha T going hard, Flosstradamus turning the HARD Stage into a mosh pit, and Oliver delivering the disco goodness all the way in the Green Tent. The "Tower of Baauer" was in full effect, with plenty of drum and bass going off in the middle of the field. RL Grime might not be playing (although his secret identity Clockwork is), but both singles "Tell Me' and "Core" were played at plenty of sets throughout the day.
The second half continues today with international superstar DJ Tiesto, LA favorite Dillon Francis, the HARDfather himself, Gary "Destructo" Roberts, and a whole host of smaller acts. UK favorites NERO will close out the HARDer side stage and French DJ Brodinski will close out the much smaller Green tent. This festival has always been about pleasing as many fans as possible with a wide swtah of music, although there doesn't seem to be any bands playing guitars this year, unlike alums such as Chromeo and Ratatat.
