62 million Nova Max Blood Glucose Strips and Nova Max Plus Glucose Meter Kits are being recalled worldwide after it was discovered that they (may) show false abnormally high blood sugar levels.
The strips, which were manufactured between December 2011 and April of this year were sold online as well in retail stores to both consumers as well as healthcare facilities in the US and Puerto Rico, as well as Canada, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Jamaica, The Dominican Republic, The UK, Finland, Germany, Belgium, Saudi Arabia and the Congo posing a serious health threat to all diabetics in these countries.
“People with diabetes make self-management decisions based on blood glucose readings, so accuracy of the results is critical. When readings are high, they might adjust their dosages of insulin upwards to compensate, and as a result end up with extreme hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if the readings are wrong,” warned Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, executive director of Winthrop University Hospital’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute in Mineola, NY.
Symptoms of low blood sugar can include sweating, shaking, excessive thirst, nausea, weakness, headaches, and mental confusion, as well as fainting and seizures. If not treated immediately, patients could die.
Consumers who want to check if their testing strips are included in the recall can do so by going online to www.novacares.com/news/nova-max-recall.php They can also call Nova’s company hotline at 1-800-681-7390. Customers can return the strips and receive replacements free of charge.
Note: If you or someone you know is beginning to show signs of low blood sugar, it is important to take some simple sugars or carbohydrates to counteract it. According to health care specialists at UCSF Medical Center the following items each contain 15 grams of carbohydrates which can be absorbed easily into the blood stream and boost blood sugar levels: 1 tablespoon of sugar in water; 5 small gum drops; 12 gummy bears, 6 large jelly beans, 5 Life Savers; 15 Skittles; 1 Tablespoon honey, jam or jelly; and 4 Starburst; as well as ½ cup each of apple juice, orange juice and regular soda.
Chocolate, however, which also contains fat and protein will not work fast enough..
