The Overlord awakened at Worlds of Fun this year to a brand-new Extreme Haunt—the London Terror. Victims—er, guests—at the theme park can step back in time and into the fog-filled streets of not-so-merry old England, where the villains of the night are terrorizing the townsfolk. Step lively, or you’ll fall prey to Jack the Ripper’s bloody blade or Dr. Jekyll’s twisted, grisly experiments!
The fog at times is so enveloping—a real pea-souper from the days of Sherlock Holmes—that you can’t see where you’re going. The fact that bloodthirsty werewolves and other Creatures of the Night might be lurking right beside you, shrouded in mist and ready to pounce, will definitely give you goosebumps.
The various characters in the London Terror area are extremely believable actors, complete with Cockney accents and period clothing. This aura of credibility makes your experience with them even more chilling.
Four more Extreme Haunts are back for 2011—Bloodshed, Asylum Island, McCarthy’s Doll Factory, and Cornstalkers. Other Haunts attractions include The Fright Zone, Lair of the Vampire, and Outlaws Revenge. And, brand-new for 2011, is a display of “midget wrestling” every Friday and Saturday night, Oct. 7-29.
Kids under age 14 are advised to leave early in the evening, when the thrills get more intense, but there’s lots of scare-free fun for them during the daytime hours. They can join Midway Monsters for Captain Jack’s Street Dance, get goodies from Buccaneer’s Hideaway, watch illusionists John Bundy and Morgan dig up a treasure chest full of pirate magic in Skullduggery, enter Captain Kitty’s Halloween Costume Contest, listen to silly tales at Hexaba’s Hogwash, wind their way through the Magical House on Boo Hill, search for toys in Snoopy’s Big Treasure Hunt, and sing along with Charlie Brown’s Pirate Adventure.
Family fun also includes the Haunted Homecoming show at Meat Cleaver High, Digger’s Used Coffin Lot (where you can “test ride” a casket), and Witch Doctor’s Revenge.
And some of the attractions are so much more thrilling to ride in the dense fog—especially the railroad train, with its black bunting adorning each car, and “Le Taxitour.”
Worlds of Fun does a spectacular job of decorating for Halloween, and it’s enjoyable just to walk around admiring all the skeletons, gravestones, coffins, hearses—and, oh yes—the 350+ monsters roaming the grounds.
