World Youth Day to host new pontiff

The Vatican has confirmed that World Youth Day will proceed as planned. The event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 23-28, 2013. It will be the first major event for the new pontiff.

Cardinal Tempesta will be hosting the event. He has said, "it would be a beautiful sign of new times for Catholic youth, joyful for all, and with Benedict XVI's prayers."

The only possible changes will be in the agenda of which places the new pontif will visit while in Rio.

World Youth Day was begun by Bl. John Paul II. The first World Youth Day was held in Buenes Aries, Argentina. Since 2002, World Youth Day events have been held every three years. Bl. John Paul II and St. Teresa of Calcutta are considered patron saints of World Youth Day.

The conclave to select the next pontiff will be held in mid-march.
