The calendar marks an effort today devoted to a serious cause, World Suicide Prevention Day. Like-minded and caring individuals around the world are raising money for this fatal disease.
Yes, it is a disease. Suicide is an affect of depression. Most who suffer depression reach out in an effort to be saved although many in the sidelines are not aware of this plea. Subtle but extremely grave, it can be lost in translation.
According to Healthier You.com, there are, on average, 8 to 25 attempts of suicide for one completion. It is the 11th leading cause of deaths in the United States and depression is among the strongest of its risk factors.
You do not have to be a doctor to help. You can be the intermediate connection that keeps this person alive. Your words might enable them to see a value in the moment to living one more day. One day at a time might be all they can comprehend and handle until they are able to seek professional help.
Please, be aware of those around you. Listen and watch closely. If someone is lethargic or seem unplugged from the vitality of life, reach out to them. If someone casually communicates that they do not have a reason to live, take this comment seriously. Don’t worry about saying the wrong thing, say something; it might be the lifeline they needed to pull them back in at that very critical moment. Contribute to this cause, get involved and save a life.
