World Spay Day: 'Purrfect howliday' shines spotlight on spaying/neutering

When it comes to animal-related "howlidays," today is the cat's meow! It's World Spay Day. Sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, World Spay Day is officially observed on the last Tuesday in February.

Importance of Spaying & Neutering Your Pets

It is estimated that 6 to 8 million animals end up in shelters every year. Sadly, about half of those unwanted, unloved, abused and neglected animals are euthanized while waiting to find their 'furrever' homes. “Fixing” your pet not only reduces unwanted or unplanned litters, but also reduces the homeless animal population and unnecessary euthanasia of these beautiful creatures.

Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Programs

In an effort to encourage people to spay and/or neuter their four-legged friends, organizations, shelters and vet clinics around the world are participating in the yearly event. From low-cost spay/neuter procedures, various fundraisers and educational events, the global effort helps raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering pets around the globe.

If you have been considering opening your home and your heart to an animal in need, today is the "purrfect" day! Please contact your local veterinary clinic or shelter to find out if they will be participating this year or enter your zip/postal code to find an event nearest you in the United States or Internationally.

And be sure to enter the World Spay Day 2013 Pet Pageant contest by submitting your pet's photograph online.
