World Spay Day events in Pittsburgh

World Spay Day, an event organized by the Humane Society of the United States, is officially the last Tuesday of every February.  This year, World Spay Day falls on February 28, 2012.  The Humane Society of the United States is taking the entire month of February to promote spaying and neutering programs not only for feral cats and street dogs, but also for the companion animals we all love so much.

It’s a sad and sobering fact that an estimated 6-8 million dogs and cats find their way into shelters every year (source, HSUS).  Shelters work hard to find new homes for these unwanted, homeless animals.  The lucky ones find their forever families.  The unlucky ones, an estimated 3-4 million dogs and cats (source, HSUS), are euthanized every year, because there just aren’t enough homes for all of them and the shelters are all filled to capacity.

These innocent animals are sentenced to death every day - unwanted, unloved and alone, and their only “crime” is being homeless.  We have the power to stop this senseless killing, simply by having our pets spayed and neutered, which in turn helps to control the pet overpopulation.

In honor of World Spay Day, shelters around Pittsburgh are offering low cost spay and neuter programs to help stop the animal overpopulation problem in our area.

At the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, February is spay and neuter month for cats.  In honor of World Spay Day, they have agreed to provide discounted spay and neuter surgeries to an additional 80 cats at their North Shore Facility and an additional 25 cats at their Fallen Timber Facility.

“The cats at the North Shore Facility will be signed up through our ‘Spay Day Program’.  The cost will be $60 for spay or neuter, FVRCP vaccination, rabies vaccination and microchip.  Our current ‘Spay Day Program’ is available every Sunday.  During the month of February, we will expand our affordable ‘Spay Day Program’ to include every Saturday as well,” says WPHS Medical Director Dr. Jonna Swanson.

If you are interested in signing up your cat for spaying or neutering at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society’s Fallen Timber Facility, their "Spay Day Program" will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012.

Cats will need to be signed up through the "Spay Day Program" and the cost will be discounted by 50 percent.  The price is now $30 for a spay or neuter, and also includes vaccinations and microchip.  This special is good only at their Fallen Timber Facility, located in Elizabeth.

If you are interested in having your cat spayed or neutered through the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society “Spay Day Program” you must register online or by calling 412-321-4625, extension 246.

Research shows that one single spay surgery can save 55 animals from being born (source, WPHS).   It is also a fact that every eight seconds a shelter animal is euthanized simply, because of pet overpopulation and lack of a home.  Please do your part and have your pets spayed and neutered.  You’ll be saving more lives than you realize!
