World's Tallest Donkey makes his bray to Madison for Midwest Horse Fair

Who’s the tallest donkey in the world? Romulus, an American Mammoth Jackstock gelding, seems to fit the bill. And he’s coming to the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison in April, along with his slightly smaller brother, Remus.

Phil and Cara Yellott, of Red Oak, Texas, purchased the pair of donkeys after spotting them in a Craigslist ad in October 2012. The Yellotts named the duo for the famous twins of Roman mythology. At the time, Romulus and Remus were somewhat skinny looking. After settling in at 4C Stables, in Waxahatchie, Texas, the donkeys quickly regained ground, as well as size and socialization.

After registrants at the American Donkey and Mule Society (ADMS) suggested that Romulus might qualify as the world’s tallest donkey, the Yellotts applied for the honors with the Guinness Book of World Records.

Valerie Jaffe, D.V.M., measured the towering equid at 17 hands (or 58 inches) tall. Romulus took the top title, hands-down, toppling the 15.3-hand Oklahoma Sam, who previously held the spot.

The Guinness Book of World Records officially certified Romulus as the World’s Tallest Donkey on May 13, 2013.

At their home farm in Texas, nine-year-old Romulus and seven-year-old Remus see visitors only by appointment. But at the 2014 Midwest Horse Fair, they will welcome any comers.

The 2014 Midwest Horse Fair, themed “Horse Tales,” takes place April 11 to 13 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
