World’s oldest woman dies at 115

The world’s oldest woman has died at the age of 115. Koto Okubo died on Saturday in a nursing home in Kawasaki City, Japan. The world’s oldest woman had lived with her 88-year-old son in the same nursing home according to an Associate Press report on Jan. 13, 2013.

The world’s oldest woman’s family did not release the cause of Koto Okubo’s death or any other details. However, the Telegraph reports on Jan. 14, 2013, that according to Koto Okubo’s 88-year-old son, the oldest woman in the world died of pneumonia.

Koto Okubo held the title of being the oldest woman in the world for less than a month after Dina Manfredini had died in the United States at the age of 115. Dina Manfredini who was born April 4, 1897, and died Dec. 17, 2012, held the title of being the oldest person in the world for two weeks.

After Dina Manfredini’s death, the title of the oldest person in the world went to 115-year-old Jiroemon Kimura in Kyoto, Japan. Jiroemon Kimura was born on April 19, 1897.

Koto Okubo who died on Saturday was born on Dec. 24, 1897, thus only about 8 months younger than the oldest man in the world.

The oldest woman in Japan is now 114-year-old Misao Okawa who lives in Osaka, according to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare.

The Japanese population has one of the longest living people in the world. For the past 42 years, more and more Japanese people live longer than 100 years. “Experts put the longevity of the Japanese population down to diet and an advanced healthcare system.”
