Families and eager readers came out in droves today for the 8th Annual Orange County Children's Book Festival. Held at the Orange Coast College Campus, authors, illustrators, publishers, book and food vendors were on hand to promote children's literacy. Free bookmarks, magazines and temporary tattoos were being handed out at every turn with kid oriented entertainment on the main stage.
Author and Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon was on hand to autograph Tilly the Trickster, her children's book, while illustrators Steve Gray and Lisa Fields gave drawing demonstrations of some of their characters.
On the main stage, festival goers were given a live performance by 12 3/4 year old Olivia Rox. Following thereafter was a performance by Ms. Victoria Burnett who started off her storytelling set with a fun African song then gave the audience a lesson in the BBC - Black Baptist Church 101. Full of energy, sass and presence on stage, complete with teaching the BBS - the Black Baptist Sway, Ms. Burnett had no problem having all eyes on her.
Author Daniel A. Miller (The Short Death of Phineas Bean) of Chino Hills and co-authors Lauren Alexander Schmitt and Justine Leah Schmitt (Stanley! Other Kids are Starving in Japan) from Simi Valley, signed copies of their books and offered additional fun giveaways.
